Arkell vs Jones: Round 3: British Championship

close

Whilst I was enjoying the sun, some hardened chess gladiators where battling away in the 3rd round of the British Championships.

It was not all fun and games for me. After deciding to chill out alongside the banks of the River Wey, myself and two friends thought that it would be a fun idea to chance our arm, (literally) on the very suspect rope swing, that hovered over our little patch of river.

My first attempt (which was captured on my friends camera…) was rather badly timed and I ended up falling directly into the river, smacking my foot on some rocks and incurring a rather nastily bruised foot…

This does bring back some rather bad memories of withdrawing from the Hastings congress

Anyway for your entertainment here is a video of one ginger going for a swim…

Ginger takes a dip…

My friend, fired up with adrenaline also gave it a go and also ended up with a seriously bruised foot. Not being deterred the third and final member of our group, the only girl of the group, managed a very successful lift off, but the decent also incurred her a rather nasty landing.

So all fully soaked and injured, we decided to pass out in the sun to dry up. Whilst this was all going on there where some interesting games being played in the British Championship.

Earlier on I was watching Keith Arkell’s game against Gawain Jones with interest. I was very confident about Keith’s position but Gawain is a very resourceful player and he managed to just about keep enough pressure in the position. I have decided to take a look at this game below. There is a you tube clip and also if you click on the highlighted print, British Championship R3: Keith Arkell vs Gawain Jones you should get a video of the game.

I expect that Keith felt similar to me after my dip, when he had to place his hand out in resignation. Hopefully he will bounce back and it looks like Ga has everything going his way here and he is going to be a hard man to stop.
