A Boring Draw?

len3

Well, I had another French Defence today against a talented, young, Swiss player. It was an interesting battle but unfortunately the game ended in a rather premature draw.

My opponent played a very interesting and unique idea in the opening which is well worth investigating. So far I have played 4 juniors out of 5 games which is starting to make me feel like an old man! Where did all those years go? (do not answer that!)

That leaves me on 4/5 and half a point off the pace, which means I need to up my game and finish with a big score to have any chance of winning the event.

Aly is doing ok but also need a big finish to become Swiss ladies champion. Anyway, fingers crossed, we need to earn our petrol money home! (Yes I decided to drive)

I have attached a video file of today’s game which can be seen below. I have also managed to download 3 photos off my phones camera to my computer. Basically we did a 2 hour walk up a mountain to find a massive waterfall, very nice!

Thanks for the great video. I was always curious to see your version of a quick “Grandmaster Draw”. ;)

Hi Simon, yet another interesting game !

I am playing Stephen Gordon in a simul tonight and i am going to study your Rubinstein Dutch win against him a couple of years ago and try and pinch a couple of your ideas from that game !!! Pre match prep helps as I beat Keith arkell following some ideas in a Burgess Torre win against him.
See you at Uxbridge…swiss alps preferably to greater london !!! Regards, Kevin, Bingley. Regards to Aly..still not convinced about her early Ne4 against my h3 and g4 in the Dutch !!!

A nice game Simon but it was a shame you didn’t allow a transposition to an exchange french. It would have been entertaining to see you exert your direct style onto it.
Maybe I’ll have to invest in your DVD after all…

Thats what I like to hear!! You know that you want to buy that DVD.

Why not reply 1…f5! to 1 d4?! That way you could make the GM play the Dutch.
By the way, the Dutch system Simon instructs on his DVD is not the Rubinstein, but, rather the Iliyn-Zhenevsky or the Classical Dutch how it is referred to in Western Europe.

Nice game Kevin!! Another GM scalp for you, hopefully I never face you in a simul!

I enjoyed that, thank you. Picking a nitlet: you said …a6 was a bit Basman-ish, did you? Well, some decades ago he often played to swop his bad French bishop by …Bd7, …a6 and …Bb5. He said it worked ok against Advance variation but didn’t fit the Winawer as well, so I don’t think he had to enforce his patent.
