Music + Chess: Test 2

So LeonardI have decided to return to this very important experiment. First of all I have to say thank you to everyone for the song suggestions. I will do my best to try them all out!

The first on the list was, ‘Leonard Cohen’s’, ‘Everybody knows’. This was a suggestion of the webmaster, Simon Ansell, so it is bound to hold a bit of weight.

I can vaguely remember listening to this song late in the evening at the Hastings chess tournament with Bob Eames and Si. It did not seem to help my result there…

Anyway a great song, which would be well suited to a tense game (last round of the British?) when the nerves are jingling and a bit of relaxation is needed…

Music + Chess: A Scientific Experiment

Prodigy - (1994) Music For The Jilted Generation

Can music help you play better chess?

Well here at gingergm.com I am going to conduct a very important Scientific experiment. An experiment to  find out what music helps a chess player.

A bit of hip-hop? Classical? Heavy Metal? Or maybe some dance?

To start this experiment, I set up my lab. Which included me and a laptop with ICC. The music in question was, The Prodigy.

A 23 Move win against Mamedyarov! In the Dutch!!

mamedyarov03-fl One of the dangers that players now face when they play me, at any format, is the problem that the game may appear on this website! Now this is unfortunately going to be the case for Mamedyarov.

I have been suffering today with a nasty hangover after rather excessively celebrating the England victory yesterday. My normal way to chill out when I am in this state is with a couple of Blitz games on the Internet Chess Club. http://www.chessclub.com/

I have become rather obsessed with the 5 minutes pool at the moment and I found myself facing Shahriyar Mamedyarov with the Black pieces. Well I was quite pleased with the game, a win with the Classical Dutch in 22 moves!

Harrow Simultaneous

h4 I was lucky enough to land a simultaneous display at Harrow chess club last Thursday. Nevil Chan the captain of the Drunken Knights and Harrow did a great job of arranging the event. I was faced with 42 boards, the most that I have ever done, and I took Black on every board.

It was due to be completed in 3 hours which was a bit of a struggle but I really should start by mentioning the events of the night before.

On Wednesday the 9th of June, Gary (a good friend of mine who jointly came up with the Killer Dutch DVD idea) was back on the beer after a 3 month break!!!!!

A Fascinating Kings Indian Defence

matterhorn-zermatt-4328 On Sunday myself and Aly popped over to Solothurn, in Switzerland, to play for our Swiss league team ‘Trubschachen’,

I was glad to see that I was paired against a 2600 Ukrainian GM. I had the Black pieces and choose the Kings Indian Defence. It was a very exciting game and I came within a whisker of winning. Luckily for us the game was a draw and our team managed to win the match. Giving us a good chance at getting promoted. I have annotated the game below in text, a video will shortly follow.

I think you’ll agree, very interesting!

The Black Dog has arrived!

black_dog_jaggery_ale_gruen_thumb[4]

Here it is! Check out the video below!

Myself and Clive of Chilli Pepper Films have been working on a short film that shows another version of Winston Churchill’s ‘Black Dog Day’.

Winston used this expression to explain his bouts of depression that he used to get. Well the video below shows my worst game, a game I had against Danny Gormally. My chess depression.

It is a bit fun, so do not take it seriously. Any comments are welcome.

Sunningdale Open

chess I have just returned from playing one of the e2-e4 events over this bank holiday weekend. In the end I came joint second with 5.5/7. The tournament was rather up and down for me. I lost early on to Radovanovic but I finished strongly with a win in the Classical Dutch against A.Slavin. I am going to have a look at that game in the video below. Any comments are welcome!
