2nd Big Slick International??

I have just returned from a ‘business meeting’, my kind of steps to the skybusiness meeting.

The kind of meeting that takes place over a couple of pints of Ale in a friendly environment. An environment where the ideas flow and the crazy becomes possible.

This is the kind of environment that lead me to building this website, making a DVD and running the 1st Big Slick International.

And guess what, another idea has been born…

I love chess and I want to play chess in a friendly environment where I can enjoy a drink but still hope to improve my game – where do I go?

Maybe a weekend tournament, somewhere.

The only problem with that is that I have to give up my weekend and I also might have to travel miles away.

chess cafe Bring on the 2nd Big Slick International!!!!!!!!

Ok this is the idea…. Of course it is only an idea at the moment and some changes will have to be made but what do people think of the concept below? Please leave comments.

1) A 1 day event.

2) 5 minute or 15 minute games being the menu of the day.   chess blitz

3) You can play for an hour or the whole day.

4) You are guaranteed to play a Grandmaster.

5) Minimum entry £5 – Maximum entry, at you and the GM’s discretion.

6) You turn up and play the ‘nominated GM’ in a 5 min game. The clock times/money odds are decided on grade. So even a 1600 has a chance against a 2600, for example,

Time Odds

1000-1800: 1.30-5

1800-2000: 2.30-5

2000-2150: 3.00-5

2150-2300: 3.30-5

2300+: 5-5 or to be decided between the individuals…

Money Odds

1000-1800: 8-1

1800-2000: 5-1

2000-2150: 3-1

2150-2300: 2-1

2300+: evens or to be decided between the individuals…

7) You can pick your stake against the GM. While you wait you can play blitz against anyone else.

8) £500 added prize fund money

9) The GM is the ‘Bounty Prize’; whoever beats the GM gets the ‘snowball prize. This starts at £50 for the first game and builds up £2.50-5 per 5 min game the GM plays. Who ever beats the GM gets thebounty pot!!!!

For example, if you get a game at 2pm and the ‘snowball pot’ is £300 pounds. lets say your rating is 1798, the GM is tired you play for £5 and win at money odds, you win £340 in under 10 minutes!!!

10) You do not have to play for money, just turn up and enjoy some blitz chess!

11) Lunchtime Lecture by a Grandmaster 1 – 1-30 free!!!!

12) There are also prizes going on with any friendly games/side games!!! For example,

a) The person who scores the most points in friendly games over the day gets £50/100. Each friendly game must be noted by ‘x’. You can not play the same player for more than 4 games to be counted and you can only register a game every 15 minutes.

b) Mini tournament!! To be decided on the day. Lets say 5 players want to play a 30minute tournament / 5 round tournament, ok!! lets go! We will make sure an organiser keeps an eye on events.

13) This tournament is meant to be a good fun tournament, where people are allowed to talk (within reason and not to any players during there games!!) there also might be some background music!! Lets have some fun and play some chess!!!!!!!!!!

Ok just an idea for now so changes will probably be made but;

What does everyone think????????????????????????????????

Sounds good to me – I stopped playing tournaments a few years back as I got bored of generally scoring about 50% in Majors and wasn’t really enjoying it anymore. Poker took over instead, much more chance of a return on cash laid out and usually more sociable!

Something along the lines of what you suggest sounds more fun – you could also include impromptu handicap team matches with money odds at evens e.g. 6 board matches with score to win based on combined team grades so a 4-2 defeat could be a handicap victory. You could do this with any time controls that fit but 15 mins each sounds practical.

Anyway, good luck if you go ahead with it.

Hi Ian, a perfect venue for you then. Chess in the day and poker in the evening!

I like the idea of a team handicap match. It could introduce some good banter and tense moments, just what we need. When I get more feedback I will try to put a proper structure together. Please keep those comments coming in, even if you think the idea is bad, let me know.

I like the handicap idea but would prefer 15 mins per game as a time limit. A team event running alongside would be good so long as teams could be formed on an impromptu basis

Hi Hugh,

I hope the Kings Indian is going ok! Yeah maybe the 5 minute time limit is too quick, it might be best for us to give people a choice of time limits.

Ok see you soon!

What if the GM is Keith arkell who you believe you would generally roger on a regular basis at the quick stuff?

Hi Simon,

Fantastic site (good to see a GM making at least some effort with the internet!).

I can’t make Big Slick tournaments (live in the North aka Manchester) but they sound like a brilliant idea. Giving the “punters” an opportunity to play GMs is always going to be good for the game and I think it’s important GMs / IMs and FMs alike break down the whole “us and them” mentality.

I’ll be visiting the blog regularly as added it to my feed reader.
Please feel free to drop by my blog when you get a chance. I’ll be posting some interesting chess articles fairly soon.

Wish you the best of luck!

Purton, you turn up with your 500 smackers, and we’ll play your 5 minutes against my 2(I assume you are about 190?) and we’ll see who the daddy is.

That’s the spirit! I look forward to that match… U guys have to put your money where your mouth is now!

How about a blitz simul against a GM !
Seriously I am looking forward to the 2nd Big Slick.

Blitz simul!!! Will have to think about that one! We are now thinking about a 30min tournament, maybe on the last Sunday of every month.

It sounds like a fun idea to me. I don’t see any reason why all events must conform to a practically religious, silent and serious ambience. Perhaps the gambling element might be double-edged in terms of the event’s appeal? On the other hand, the prize for beating a GM in conjunction with time odds does mean that players who probably wouldn’t get anything in a conventional tournament have a shot at some money as well as a memorable upset, which must be a positive point.

Sounds like a great idea

I would enjoy it
