Another Interesting Gambit against the Dutch

image

Last Monday I had quite an interesting encounter against Richard McMichael in a Middlesex league match. I had the White pieces and found myself facing the Dutch!!

On this occasion I thought that I would venture the ‘Povah’ Gambit. Which you can get after 3 e4!? hence the diagram on the left.

Below is a quick video on the game if you are interested.

Bob Eames on the King's Gambit!

FM Robert Eames in beach volleyball action, shortly after making an IM norm.

Here at gingergm we should be feeling very privileged to have a guest annotator in the form of Bob Eames! Bob is well-known for his inspiring attacking play and in this post he is going to demonstrate his win against G. Kjartansson from Hastings.

This was a brilliant game and a top contender for best game prize. It was an exciting King’s Gambit opening. This opening has gone out of fashion recently but it often leads to some of the most exciting positions in chess.

Bob wants to inspire a King’s Gambit blog, leading to a flood of creative games and ideas! Good luck Bob and nice game!

2nd Big Slick International??

I have just returned from a ‘business meeting’, my kind of steps to the skybusiness meeting.

The kind of meeting that takes place over a couple of pints of Ale in a friendly environment. An environment where the ideas flow and the crazy becomes possible.

This is the kind of environment that lead me to building this website, making a DVD and running the 1st Big Slick International.

And guess what, another idea has been born…

Find the Mate!!

image I believe that one of the best ways a chess player can improve is to concentrate on solving some puzzles.

If you aim to solve one a day this will improve your tactical skills and keep you sharp. Calculation is probably the most important thing in chess, so it is worth practicing.

For this reason I am going to put up some problems for you to solve.

Let’s start off with an easy one.

In the position above White has 3 pieces attacking the Black king, how can White force checkmate?

Answers at the bottom of this post.

Killer Dutch: Some Comments and Reviews

Sean Marsh – Marsh Towers:

‘GM Simon Williams is an expert on this opening and his confidence in the defence and material is evident throughout the entire disc. His presentation skills are excellent. He is relaxed in front of the camera, maintains steady eye contact with the viewer and speaks very clearly.’

‘The graphics are impressive too, with footage from various chess events being played before each chapter starts. We see snippets of chess boxing, open-air chess with huge pieces at Trafalgar Square and various other bits and pieces. The production values are very high and the presentation is never allowed to become dry.’

Going Dutch in Iceland

First of all, apologies “Bishops: Part 2” (Part 1 is here) never materialised, I had other priorities.

I’m currently in Reykjavik playing in the annual Open tournament. I’ve been meaning to play here for a while, Simon W likes the place and has previously reported favourably. This year I finally managed to make it!

Reykjavik City Hall

The venue, Reykjavik City Hall

It’s obvious what Simon likes about Reykjavik – the pace of life is very relaxed (unlike the nightlife, which is legendary!) and the scenery is beautiful – even in the heavy snow. I’m looking forward to a few free days after the chess to explore. I’d certainly recommend the tournament to anyone – Iceland isn’t nearly as expensive as it once was since the well-documented financial crisis.

After six rounds, the chess isn’t going particularly well to be honest – I’ve hung two pieces in perfectly good positions, and yesterday was completely winning against American GM Yuri Shulman (2624) but managed to spoil a complicated position and even lost.

There has been one bright spot though. Having recently proof-read (proof-watched?) all 7 hours of a certain ‘Killer Dutch’ DVD and having nothing to lose, I thought it was time to give the opening a punt!

BUY THIS DVD and you too can win games like this:
