Rowson-Williams: A Kings Indian Clash

Jonathan Rowson

I had an interesting game against Jonathan Rowson on Saturday at the 4NCL.

I suspected before the match that I would be playing Jonathan so I had a bit of time to prepare. After my recent bad result at Hastings I wanted to play as good a game as possible.

As expected it was a Samisch variation of the Kings Indian and the following chaos emerged:

I will take a look at this game in 2 short videos, each around about 15 minutes long. The first video covers the opening and the second part the middlegame and ending. Ok I hope that you enjoy!

Interesting game, would never have thought that …a5 could be such a crucial move!

Surprised that White didn’t enter the variation that you discussed at the end with c7 as it takes all danger away and it looks like you would still have to work for the draw. Time control a factor I guess.

Great commentary by the way, variations well explained – I always play the Dutch but want to learn the King’s Indian for some variety.

Fischer once played 11….Nc5, but his opponent had a very good position after 12.0-0-0 Qa5 13. Qxd6 Ne6 14. a3 so he lashed out with 14….b5?! and was lucky to win.

It looks as though 17….f5 is an improvement over 17….a6 but not necessarily for the reasons you give! In the variations you give with 19….e3 you have better moves e.g.:
17….f5 18 Nb5 fxe4 19.Nxd6 (19.Rxd6 Qg5! (instead of 19….e3) 20.Bxc5 exf3 21.gxf3 Rxf3 22.Rxe6 Qc1+) 19….exf3 (instead of 19….e3) 20.gxf3 (20.Nxc8 fxg2 21.Rxd8 gxh1=Q 22.Rxf8+ Bxf8 23.Bxc5 Bh3 is better but still good for Black) Rxf3 21.Nxc8 Re3+! 22.Bxe3 Qh4+ 23.Kd2 Qf2+ 24.Kc3 Bxe3.

Your comment that your position is completely winning after 41….Bb6 looks slightly optimistic as White has a number of better moves than 42.Ra1? e.g:
42.Qb5 (42.Qd6 with the same idea of 42….Bc7 43.Qb4 might allow 42….Ba5!?) 42….Bc7 43.Qb4 Kf8 (43….Kg8 44.c5 Qh6 45.f4 Bxf4 46.Qb3+ Kf8 47.h3 Qh4 48.Ra1 Kg7 may be a better try, but rather unclear!) 44.f4 Qxf4 45.Rgf1 Qxf1+ 46.Rxf1+ Bxf1 may be better for Black, but tricky to win.

It was surprising that …a5 could have made such a difference but that is often the case in these really tactical positions. One slight change in the position can alter the outcome of the game.

I was amazed that Rowson did not enter the endgame when he had a chance but I guess that shows his fighting spirit, all be it, it was clearly not appropriate here.

Michael thank you for your deep analysis! I had no idea that Fischer had played 11…Nc5, thats interesting but as you mention I guess that White is doing well in the resulting position.

In the video’s I was only mentioning what my thoughts were during the game. I have not looked at the variations in depth hence the odd mistake.

Saying that I am pretty convinced that 41…Bb6 is a winning position for Black but a lot of care is needed as it often is in such crazy positions!
