Best Game Prize Hastings

poker_chips_all_in-1

In general the Hastings chess tournament was a horrible affair for me but on the odd occasion there was the odd glimmer of sunshine.  One of these rays was my last round game which managed to win me the Best Game Prize. It was a fun game in the true spirit of Coffee House chess. Anyway below is a quick video on it:

So as you can see it is doubtful whether the game was sound. Another possible candidate for best game prize was a brilliant Kings Gambit, played by Bob Eames. I am hoping that Bob will annotate this game at some point.

Hi Simon

I am concerned about your emphasis on the result, because for me you are one of the most exciting creative dynamic UK Grandmasters. Don’t go reparing your “weaknesses” – instead I reckon, just make your reportoire more aggressive and just build on your existing “strengths”. Your strengths reflect your personality and style – don’t go after a Karpov boring style – that would be a great loss for your exciting style of play, and potential for fantastic results, when risks are taken to break down defences, etc.

Check out Shirov in the Corus etc, and your day will come where you will get a 3200 performance. Dynamic players like you will have ups and downs and that is part of your course, and your style, and clearly you also like the Romantic period. That is about beauty and creativity and not altogether about “soundness”.

I hope simply you become a more aggressive and creative player, and don’t try and play more boringly in the future.

This was a great video, and very interesting line against the Kings Indian, which I hope to try some time. It was a very interesting combinatory idea to do the queen sac, and amazing how coordinated the white pieces are, and the conjestion black has in untangling on the Q-side.

Best wishes
Tryfon
