The Killer Dutch!! Arriving Soon in a Good Outlet Near You!!

Last Monday was a breath of fresh air for me in an otherwise torrid and depressing Hastings Chess Congress. We successfully managed to launch our first DVD, the ‘Killer Dutch’!

A number of us worked our arses off over Christmas in order to be able to have a copy that we could show on Monday. Clive and Justin from ‘Chilli Pepper Films’ must be especially praised for their hard work.

We coincided the launch of the DVD with a Dutch theme blitz tournament that was a great event, every game had to start 1 d4 f5!

This took place in ‘The Pig in Paradise’ pub who kindly let us have the venue for free. Entries to the tournament included: Keith ‘the grinder’ Arkell, Danny ‘knockout’ Gormally, Andrew Martin, myself, Simon Ansell plus a number of other players. Danny was victorious after beating Simon A in the two-game playoff (both scored an excellent 6.5/7), this may have something to do with the amount of alcohol consumed…

I am not suggesting that Danny did not drink but I am convinced he did not drink as much as some of the other players!

Entry was free and many other players won special Dutch themed prizes, including cheese, tulips and Advocaat!

I managed to get a promising position against Danny after:

1 d4 f5 2 h3!?

Which is an extremely rare but interesting line that has been used by Korchnoi. The idea is to play 3 g4 and attack Black on the dark squares. I also had a chance to try this out in the main tournament and I came out on top, we will take a look at that game later, in another post.

I have covered this line extensively in the DVD and found it to be very tricky to play against. You can also play this move against the Leningrad Dutch, Classical Dutch and Stonewall Dutch so it has a lot to offer.

We did a run of 100 DVDs; they need to be perfected before they are ready to hit the worldwide market but expect them to be ready within the next 2 weeks!! You will very soon be able to purchase them on this website, with a free signature thrown in. In the meantime, to pre-order a copy email sales@gingergm.com. We are quite confident that they will raise the level of chess DVDs out there. Anyway fingers crossed!

DVD Reviews

IM Andrew Martin in the English Chess Federation Right Move Magazine, February 2010:

“The young English Grandmaster Simon Williams has recently produced a new DVD entitled ‘The Killer Dutch’ . It’s an excellent and highly entertaining piece of work. Williams is known for his dynamic and unorthodox attacking style and his character comes right out over six and a half hours of Dutch discussion.

One’s first DVD can often be a nervous affair, but Williams has no problems at all. He’s in full command of the material throughout and will teach you a lot about the fighting Dutch Defence. He holds nothing back and gives his own ideas.

The production quality is first-rate and so this all adds up to a tremendous package. I highly recommend the DVD”.

I seem to remember having a laughing fit sometime during the play-off second game.

The DVD was running on a machine in the room so we could hear the Ginger GM himself commenting on some particular Dutch position in the background, which was getting a little annoying (in a good/entertaining way, naturally!). I’d just played …cxd4 and was contemplating how to proceed with my terrible position after Danny’s reply. Just then the voice from behind me said “Black should not take on d4 here”.

I resigned two moves later.

This looks brilliant! Well done Simon. I hope you are planning to do others…

Best wishes.

Yo Simon we have hauled thru over 4 hours of your DVD and are totally hooked on the Dutch now so looking for your pdf download you mention – where can we access this? Cheers :)

Good to hear you like the DVD, cheers! I will make the PDF files available for download at a later. A bit busy at the moment.
I want to have a page (on the website) where people who have brought the DVD can download stuff from. :)
Any ideas what the next DVD should be about?

Next DVD should be …a dynamic defence to e4 ! Kevin Winter, Bingley

Absolutely you should do a French Repertoire!!! I commented thusly on the Youtube page where your Dutch preview is showing…I cannot wait for your upcoming book and sure would like a nice French repertoire to augment what I currently play (Nc6 Hecht Reefschlager/Guimard). I especially need ideas against the Advance and KIA ! I’d like to branch out to a Winawer repertoire, so no worries there…I’d thoroughly enjoy a Frenchie DVD with a Winawer base. Or maybe just a Winawer DVD with ideas sprinkled in on other variants. Anyway, congrats on the DVD.

i agree…the french defence would be a good start as i like to play 1…e6 to 1.d4 and then get into a dutch but preparing for a french if e 4…Makes sense !!

Can we make it slightly less than six and a half hours long this time, please? ;)

~ Justin

No, I think that kind of running time represents a good value…

Justin works for the production company that had to edit the DVD (Chilli Pepper FIlms) and Justin had the horrible job of sitting through about 30 hours (if not a lot more) of me talking! Poor guy must be sick of my voice now, no wonder he wants the next one to be shorter!
