Last Round Pressure at the British

I am going to stick with games that I played at the British as I had a number of exciting encounters. This next game was played in the last round and my opponent was Stephen Gordon. A very talented and young player who is improving at an alarming rate.

There was extra pressure as it was the last round and this was shown with some of the moves played. The last round is always a difficult one for professional chess players as it can make the difference between them paying the rent or not! Luckily I was just about ok for a couple of months after this game. The opening was interesting and we will take a look at it in this the next video instalment.

This is one of the best chess videos I’ve ever seen (& I’ve seen a few after hanging out @ chessvideos.tv for some time now) Keep them coming thick and fast Simon your narrative is clear and concise – we met at the British Rapidplay in Halifax 2004 – I won the Minor – will be there again this year, will you be going?

It’s funny just yesterday I was reading your “Is it Always Correct To Play The Best Move” piece from Kingpin in 2003/4

Do you play blitz on the playchess server?

I look forward to watching more of your games

Another excellent video. Perhaps you could consider doing a dvd.

Hi there Simon

I really enjoy your playing style overall, and even have done a few videos of your past games, like one game where you played h4:

I think this video was just great – so enthusastic. Your play is like a playful child-like genius (in a positive sense) – combining both crude possibilities of setting up a mating attack with the d pawn and classical play for just trying to get a dangerous d pawn. The game was very dramatic showing how the asset turned into liability, but then with one slipup, again you were on top with the brilliant Re1 move. Nice stuff, nice commentary, and I like your overall playing style anyway.

Best wishes

Great presentation and a great game – especially as you played under the pressure of needing the win to get a worthwhile prize! While all of it was interesting – including the errors you revealed – but it was those earliest piece positioning ideas that I found particularly informative (eg where Black’s Queen couldn’t recapture so the Kight had to the job and in so doing moved out of the key area of play.)
Excellent stuff – Jim Patzer
