ChessBoxing: Worth a Bash?
I was recently reading the excellent Brixton and Streatham blog site, http://streathambrixtonchess.blogspot.com/, which had a piece on Chessboxing. Now the concept of Chessboxing has always intrigued me as it seems to be a interesting way to show chess in a new light. Whether it publicises it in a good way or makes a mockery of it is open to debate, but I would consider giving it a bash.
After all chess is too serious sometimes. Maybe for the media it could do with being made into more of a circus event.
An interesting concept for an improved ChessBoxing event could be the following:
Chess, Boxing, Shot drinking and Blindfold competition.
Now that would be good entertainment. This is how it could work
2 min chess round.
2 shots of vodka.
![]()
Blindfold on
2 min of boxing.
Then start it all over again. The winner is decided by checkmate or unconsciousness , i.e. heart attack, pass out etc… Anyone fancy sponsoring that event?
Obviously I would not want to take part in the event myself but it would make a great spectators sport!!
Anyway just an idea, but back to Chessboxing…
I was thinking if I could get my lazy arse out of the house and start training hardcore for a year or two, maybe I could go somewhere in the world of Chessboxing. Well most things are worth a punt,
I can think of a number of chess players who have that killer instinct. Maybe we could arrange a big event, just with chess players who fancy a bit of boxing on the side??
No, I am drifting off now! Does anyone have any thoughts who would be the ideal Chessboxer? Please leave your comments!

Hi Si,
Chessboxing. Top idea. A mate of mine arbited at the Tokyo fight a couple of years back and said it was a great do.
Suggest Kamsky’s dad as A Contender. A noted pugilist and a fearsome-looking fella if anyone has seen him in the flesh. I played Kamsky when we were both wee lads (we are same age). Remember his dad as a bear of a man – quite a lurking, menacing presence.
Time for you to get to the gym. ‘Eye of the Tiger’ on loop on your walkman, work off the lagers, and be cheering you on in the ring soon.
ta ra for now,
